FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA

There are many stories as to how Flagstaff, Arizona got its name. The most commonly accepted concerns a tall pine tree stripped of its branches and used as a makeshift flagpole one fateful July 4 more than a hundred years ago. The flag itself was made with rawhide strings. This impromptu flagpole was so tall that it was visible from far, far away and naturally, enough people began to refer to the settlement as "Flagstaff" that it became the name of the town.

Today, there are many flagpoles in Flagstaff, but the original has long since disappeared. However, Flagstaff itself has become one of the Southwest's most sought-after vacation spots in the beautiful state of Arizona.
