Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurse
The University of Iowa Heart & Vascular Adult Cardiovascular Procedure Lab is a high acuity, high volume cardiac cath lab specializing in percutaneous interventional procedures. These procedures include diagnostic left/right heart catheterizations, endomyocardial biopsies, high risk PCIs, CTOs, coronary atherectomy, balloon aortic valvuloplasty, cardiac support devices, EP device implants and ablations, peripheral studies and interventions, implanted ports, PICC lines and structural heart repairs. Additionally, cutting edge procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), percutaneous mitral repairs (Mitra Clip), and left atrial appendage closures (Watchman) are done in this area. Procedure rooms include 2 cath labs, 2 EP labs and 1 vascular lab. The cath lab team is comprised of highly skilled professionals that include radiologic technologists, registered nurses, interventional cardiology fellows and interventional cardiologists.
The registered nurse is responsible for providing high acuity nursing care during the procedure and this includes circulating, monitoring and documenting the case. Under the direction of the physician, the RN is responsible for procedural sedation and maintaining patient safety.
