Your Massachusetts Nursing License Guide

The first step in your journey to a Massachusetts nursing license starts with a visit to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Here, you will find all of the information needed to apply for a license or get a mass board of nursing license renewal if you have already been licensed in this state.

New nurses must apply for a license by exam. If you are licensed as an RN in another state, you must apply for a Massachusetts nursing license by reciprocity.

Regardless of which way you are applying, you will need to have several key items ready to go:

  • Completed application
  • Verification from all states of licensure (reciprocity only)
  • 2X2 color passport photo
  • The ability to prove that you “Are of Good Moral Character,” as defined by state law

Fees for applying by reciprocity:

  • Application fee: $275 per application
  • License verification fee: $30 per license

Fees for applying by exam:

  • Application fee: $230 per application

Renewal Information:

  • You must renew your RN license every 2 years by your birthday
  • RN license expires on EVEN-numbered years
  • RN renewal fee: $120

Is MA a Compact Nursing State?

As of right now, Massachusetts does not issue temporary licenses and does not take part in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Visit the link to see a full list of states participating in the NLC and for more information on the compact.
