About the Virginia Nursing License Process

How to Apply for a Nursing License in Virginia

Recent graduates, professionals licensed outside of Virginia, and those wanting to reinstate licenses can all apply now exclusively online for a license using the Virginia Board of nursing. If you are a graduate from an RN state-approved nursing education program that prepared you to be a nurse and need to take the NCLEX (state board), then you will need to complete the application for licensure by examination.

To apply for this you will need:

  • A fingerprint-based criminal background check (CBC).
  • To review the Laws and Regulations governing the practice of Nursing.
  • Obtain information regarding the NCLEX Examination by visiting the Pearson VUE website.
  • Complete and submit your online application and pay the fee of $190.

If you already hold an active RN license in another state, you are eligible to apply for a Virginia Nursing License by Endorsement.

To apply for endorsement you will need:

  • A fingerprint-based criminal background check (CBC).
  • To request license verification from your original state of licensure (state where you took the NCLEX). if your original state of licensure participates in the Nursys license verification system, go to: Nursys to request the verification of licensure ($30 fee).
  • To review the Laws and Regulations governing the practice of Nursing.
  • Proof of your primary state of residence.
  • Complete and submit your online application and pay the fee of $190.

Virginia Nursing License Renewal

RNs who are licensed in Virginia can renew their licenses online and the fee for a renewal is currently $140.

Is Virginia a Compact Nursing State?

Yes! Virginia is proud to be a member of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), which allows nurses living in compact states to practice in all other compact states with a single multi-state license. If your primary state of residence is a compact state, you must apply for licensure in that state.

In accordance with Virginia law (Virginia Code §54.1-3040.3 (C):) If you meet all Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs) and your primary state of residence in Virginia, you will be granted a license with multi-state privilege which allows you to practice in other compact states.
